Description
Witton Lakes are in the Stockland Green area of Birmingham. The two lakes are former drinking water reservoirs. The larger lake is used for boating and the smaller shallower lake is dedicated to wildlife. On the Northern side of the lakes is Witton Lakes Eco Hub, which has a cafe and toilets. The park has open grassland, wooded areas and wildflower meadows, numerous streams lead in and out of the lakes and a community orchard had been planted. The park has a very active friends group.
(*1) (press STAR on map), check large lake in Winter for haapana, harmaasorsa and good numbers of pikku-uikku. Lower fish numbers mean silkkiuikku are only in low numbers, kyhmyjoutsen numbers can be very high for a inner city location and telkkä and isokoskelo occasionally turn up.
(*2), the smaller lake can have tavi, Lapasorsa, Liejukana, nokikana and harmaahaikara though there is a lot of movement of ducks between each lake. A number of different species of Gull (Laridae) have been seen including kalalokki and unusually for such an inland site pikkukajava.
