Description

Laguna Nimez Nature Reserve is a 70-hectare area around a natural lagoon that is wedged in between El Calafate, one of Argentina’s busiest tourist towns, and Largo Argentino, the country’s largest freshwater lake that belongs to Los Glaciares (The Glaciers) National Park. While most visitors come to this area mainly to visit Perito Moreno, possibly the world’s most visited glacier, a side trip to Laguna Nimez is a highlight for birdwatchers and photographers alike.

Among the many species found here are Austral Rail, Black-faced Ibis, Cinereous Harrier, Correndera Pipit, Patagonian Mockingbird, Spectacled Tyrant, Chilean Flamingo and Austral Canastero.

Détails

Accès

Laguna Nimez Nature Reserve is located between El Calafate and the huge lake of Largo Argentino. A leisurely 1.5 km (less than a mile) stroll from El Calafate’s main strip, the Avenida del Libertador, means you won’t even need a rental car to get to Laguna Nimez Nature Reserve.

There is a small entrance fee. Opening hours start at 9:30 am in the summer and 10 am in the winter. (Hint: If you buy a multi-day ticket, ask nicely and promise to behave, they’ll let you enter before opening hours on subsequent days, so you can get in as the sun comes up if you’re so inclined.)

There is one main trail around the lagoon (about 2,5 km), a few side trails branching off it here and there, plus you can access the beach on Lago Argentino, where a stunning panorama awaits you if conditions allow.
