Description

Casa Quetzal has gardens for birding and photography. The gardens are at the edge of the cloudforest, but in more open area. With flowery bushes and hidden feeders it is easier to observe and photograph some otherwise difficult highland species. There are a few, short trails throughout the property, located at a hillside with panoramic views of the Savegre Valley, at the edge of the cloudforest. There is also a comfortable covered terrace with panoramic windows which can be slided open for photography. With a short trail you can go to covered hides with feeders. The native bushes and flowers make sure that we all the bird species which are possible at this elevation are around.

Flowers, bushes and hummingbird feeders attract Talamanca Hummingbird, Fiery-throated Hummingbird, Volcano Hummingbird, White-throated Mountain-gem and Lesser Violetear. Slaty Flowerpiercer, Sooty-capped Chlorosphingus, Large-footed Finch and Yellow-tighed Brushfinch are regularly around.

Much harder to see but it is around daily, is the strikingly coloured Golden-browed Chlorophonia and the skulking White-naped Brushfinch. Tanagers that you can spot include Summer Tanager, Blue-Gray Tanager and Flame-colored Tanager.

Northern Emerald-Toucanet and Resplendant Quetzal are not seen everyday in the garden, but they are around as well. Just like Rufous-browed Peppershrike, Spotted Wood-quail, Black-billed Nightingale-Thrush, Black-faced Solitaire or Long-tailed Silky-Flycatcher.
