Description
Bughdasheni Lake is a relatively small lake south of the village of Gorelovka at the mouth of the Zagranichnaia River. Like the other lakes in the Javakheti region, the lake is located on a plateau. The lake is situated at an elevation of approximately 2,000 meters, resulting in a vast and sparsely vegetated landscape. Extensive agriculture is practiced around the lake.
In spring several water birds can be expected such as: Goéland d'Arménie, Pélican blanc, Pélican frisé, Ibis falcinelle, Grue cendrée, Grèbe jougris, Grèbe à cou noir and Héron pourpré. There is also an island where Bihoreau gris and a breeding colony of Grand Cormoran are present. In addition, several Choucas des tours (soemmerringii) are present on dung heaps near the village of Gorelovka. The Cigogne blanche is well represented in the area around the lake as a breeding bird. In spring there is a chance of seeing Black-headed wagtail, Bergeronnette citrine and Pipit à gorge rousse directly around the lake. The plains surrounding the lake are full of Bruant proyer en Alouette des champs.

Bughdasheni Lake is located 175 km southwest of Tblisi. The lake can be reached from Ninotsminda by driving the paved road (E691) to Gorelovka. In Gorelovka, turn right onto a dirt road that crosses a river. This road is in poor condition, and you should drive all the way to the end until you see a birdwatching hut on the right. Press P on the map for directions.
