Description

The Büsnauer Wiesental (Büsnau meadow valley) is a protected area to the south-west of Stuttgart in direct proximity to the university campus Stuttgart Vaihingen, the Max-Planck-Institute for Solid State Research and the Pfaffenwald forest. The Wiesental consists of meadows, small streams and ponds, hedges and a few reeds and is the only remaining part of a once much larger meadow landscape.

Even though the area is quite small, the Büsnauer Wiesental can be excellent for a variety of passerine birds that are rather uncommon or rare around the city of Stuttgart. Geai des chênes, Mésange à longue queue, Roitelet huppé, Mésange nonnette, Bruant jaune, Grive litorne, Étourneau sansonnet and Pic mar can be found here throughout the entire year. Rousserolle effarvatte, Rousserolle verderolle, Fauvette des jardins, Roitelet triple-bandeau, Pie-grièche écorcheur and Milan noir are common to uncommon summer guests. In winter, Grive draine, Tarin des aulnes and Gros-bec casse-noyaux can readily be observed, while Bouvreuil pivoine and Pipit spioncelle are uncommon.

With some luck, migration can bring in particular highlights, like Tarier des prés, Traquet motteux or Gobemouche noir, as well as Pipit farlouse and Pipit des arbres.

Though technically not part of the protected area, the nearby Pfaffenwald forest houses many interesting forest birds that can sometimes even be observed around the edges of the area. These include Mésange noire, Mésange huppée, Grimpereau des bois and Pic noir. The roost of a Chouette hulotte is just at the edge of the forest and well known by local birders.
