Description

The Danube oxbow near Tegernheim is a quiet floodplain landscape with still backwaters, shallow channels, reedbeds, wet meadows, shrubs, and riparian woodland, creating a rich mosaic of habitats.

In winter, the Danube near Regensburg hosts resting Harle piette and Harle bièvre, along with Canard siffleur and Garrot à oeil d'or. Fuligule milouin and Fuligule morillon are also common. Scarcer visitors include Cygne chanteur, Oie rieuse and Oie de la toundra, and on very rare occasions Oie naine. Careful scanning of shrubs may reveal Pie-grièche grise, while Busard Saint-Martin is sometimes seen hunting overhead. From time to time Pygargue à queue blanche can fly by.

With the first warm days of spring, waders such as Courlis cendré, Barge à queue noire, Chevalier culblanc, and Bécassine des marais appear. In April and May, numbers increase and are joined by Busard des roseaux, Balbuzard pêcheur, and Bondrée apivore. From mid-April onward, Sterne pierregarin and Sarcelle d'été become increasingly frequent on the water.

The site is especially attractive for its tranquility, seasonal bird diversity, and excellent opportunities to observe waterbirds and raptors at close range in a natural setting.
