The Kliekener Aue is situated in a dynamic river landscape around old river arm of Alte Elbe. The area is repeatedly flooded. This has resulted in floodplain forest, oxbow lakes, tributary channels of the river and wet meadows. The Elbe valley is a paradise for birds and Klieken is no exception. Birds you can observe include Grand Corbeau, Pie-grièche écorcheur, Fauvette grisette, Bruant jaune, Rousserolle turdoïde, Pygargue à queue blanche, Milan royal, Grue cendrée and several species of ducks, grebes, waders and herons. Otter and beaver also occur.

Kliekener Aue is located 12 km northeast of Dessau, close to the village of Klieken. You can park in the village of Klieken and walk from there along the Kliekener Aue floodplain trail. This circular trail is about 6 km. Along the trail there are two observation towers which offer views over the Alte Elbe from two different points. Press P on the map for directions to Klieken.
