The 61-hectare site has freshwater, brackish and inter-tidal wetlands, reedbed, grassland, mangrove, shrubland and woodlands, giving a wide variety of habitat.
Hong Kong Wetland Park has a large area to explore along good paths and walkways. The range of different habitat gives rise to good numbers of species. Ecological surveys conducted at the reserve have recorded over 250 species of birds, ~50 species of dragonflies and ~160 species of butterflies.
The lakes and ponds attract many ducks, such as Gadwall, Garganey, Eurasian Wigeon, Northern Pintail and Northern Shoveler. Many species of egret and heron have been recorded. Black-faced Spoonbill, Chinese Pond-Heron, Great Egret as well as many wading birds including Black-winged Stilt, Common Snipe, Greater Painted-snipe and Avocet. In the trees and bushes look out for Scaly-breasted Munia, Swinhoe's White-eye, Sooty-headed Bulbul and Oriental Magpie-Robin. Many other species can be seen with the eBird list showing 279 recorded species to date - see weblink later on.
Hong Kong Wetland Park is located at the northern part of Tin Shui Wai, New Territories, Hong Kong. The site was originally intended to be an ecological mitigation area (EMA) to compensate for the wetlands lost due to Tin Shui Wai New Town development. Opening hours 10:00 am – 5:00 pm (closed on Tuesdays, except public holidays).
The Wetland Park is served by the MTR Light Rail, and the Wetland Park stop (1) and Tin Sau stop belong to Zone 5A for single-ride ticket. The Wetland Park stop is close to the entrance of the park.
There is a large visitor centre which holds displays and exhibitions, a cafe and toilets. There is a small admission fee to enter the park (HK$30, 2025).
There are many paths around the site. The route marked on the map is about 4 km and is mainly to give an idea of the distances. How far you choose to walk will depend on the route and paths you take. It would be easy to spend a whole day here.
