The reserve includes Lake Mezzola as well as a flat wetland and agricultural area that separates it from the upper end of Lake Como. The site is surrounded by the Alps. This sites provides excellent year-round birding. During the winter months significant numbers of waterfowl and winter finches and raptors, while during migration and summer nesting waterbirds are joined by a diversity of migratory and nesting passerines. Some of the nice birds you can see here are Grèbe esclavon, Faucon émerillon, Pie-grièche écorcheur, Milan royal and Butor étoilé.

Italiano: La Riserva Naturale Pian di Spagna e Lago di Mezzola si estende su una superficie di poco inferiore ai 1600 ettari all'estremità settentrionale del Lago di Como. La riserva comprende il Lago di Mezzola, oltre a una zona pianeggiante umida e agricola che lo separa dall'estremità superiore del Lago di Como. Il sito è circondato dalle Alpi e offre eccellenti opportunità di birdwatching durante tutto l'anno. Nei mesi invernali, la riserva ospita un numero significativo di uccelli acquatici, fringillidi invernali e rapaci. Durante la migrazione e la nidificazione estiva, agli uccelli acquatici si aggiunge una grande varietà di passeriformi migratori e nidificanti.

By train: Milano/Tirano – departure Milano (Central Station) destination Sondrio/Tirano. Stop Colico if you like to see the southern part, otherwise change train: take the one direction Chiavenna and stop in Novate Mezzola. Here you can visit the northern part of the nature reserve. There is also a local station at Dubino (mid-way between Colico and Novate Mezzola) that is convenient for walking directly onto the reserve.
By car: – from Milano, Lecco take S.S.36 (Milano – Lecco – Colico) – from Como take S.S.340 Regina – from the north Passo Spluga (close in winter) and from passo del Maloja take S.S. 37.path n.1

Italiano: In treno: Linea Milano/Tirano (partenza da Milano Centrale) destinazione Sondrio/Tirano. Fermata a Colico se si desidera visitare la parte meridionale della riserva. In alternativa, a Colico, cambiare treno e prendere la direzione Chiavenna, fermata a Novate Mezzola. Da qui si può visitare la parte settentrionale della riserva naturale. È disponibile anche una stazione locale a Dubino (a metà strada tra Colico e Novate Mezzola), comoda per accedere direttamente a piedi alla riserva. In auto: - Da Milano e Lecco, prendere la S.S.36 (Milano – Lecco – Colico). - Da Como, prendere la S.S.340 Regina. - Da nord, tramite il Passo Spluga (chiuso in inverno) o dal Passo del Maloja, prendere la S.S. 37 (o strada n.1).
