Description
The Saline di Augusta are a coastal wetland and former saltworks protected under the EU Natura 2000 network. The site covers roughly 63 hectares. Historically, the saltpans date back at least to the 16th century. Today the area survives as a brackish wetland, fed by rainwater and by seawater that infiltrates through the narrow dune ridge or enters during storm surges. The shallow basins partially dry out in summer, creating a mosaic of mudflats, pools, and salt-tolerant vegetation. This habitat attracts migratory waterbirds, which is why the site is now valued as a small but important ecological refuge.

Italiano: Le Saline di Augusta sono una zona umida costiera ed ex salina protetta dalla rete Natura 2000 dell'UE. Il sito si estende su circa 63 ettari. Storicamente, le saline risalgono almeno al XVI secolo. Oggi l'area sopravvive come zona umida salmastra, alimentata dall'acqua piovana e dall'acqua di mare che si infiltra attraverso la stretta dorsale dunale o vi entra durante le mareggiate. I bacini poco profondi si prosciugano parzialmente in estate, creando un mosaico di piane fangose, stagni e vegetazione tollerante al sale. Questo habitat attrae uccelli acquatici migratori, motivo per cui il sito è oggi apprezzato come un piccolo ma importante rifugio ecologico.

Saline di Augusta is located on the Lungomare Gioacchino Rossini in Augusta. This is the coastal road running along the eastern edge of the town, facing the bay. To get there, exit the SS114 toward Augusta, then follow signs for the Lungomare (waterfront). The saltpans are directly accessible from this road. A bird hide is located on the southern side of the area. Press P on the map for directions to a parking spot.

Per arrivarci, uscire dalla SS114 in direzione Augusta, quindi seguire le indicazioni per il Lungomare. Le saline sono direttamente accessibili da questa strada.
