The Lauwersmeer Locks are a nice birding spot for a short stop. Large groups of ducks can often be found near the locks. Many songbirds can be found around the car park. Almost always few people there. Walk a short distance onto the Lauwersmeer along the long pier. This offers a beautiful view of the Grand Cormoran colony. Many wintering birds can often be seen on this side of the island. Good site to spot Harle piette, Harle bièvre, Pygargue à queue blanche and often Martin-pêcheur d'Europe.

Nederlands: De Sluizen Lauwersmeer zijn een leuke vogelplaats voor een korte stop. Prachtig zicht op een vogeleiland (Egbert Schuldinkeiland) met grote aalscholverkolonie. Goede plek ook voor zomer- en wintergasten. Bij de sluizen zijn vaak grote groepen eenden te vinden. Rondom de parkeerplaats, veel zangvogels. Het is er bijna altijd rustig. Loop over lange pier een stuk het Lauwersmeer op. Dit geeft een prachtig zicht op de aalscholverkolonie. Aan deze kant van het eiland zijn vaak veel wintergasten te zien. Goede plek voor Harle piette, Harle bièvre, Pygargue à queue blanche en vaak Martin-pêcheur d'Europe.

The Lauwersmeer Locks are located west of the village of Lauwersoog, immediately after the harbours. Parking is available directly at the bottom of the road (plenty of space and free parking). Press P on the map for directions to the car park.
