Description

Near the River Danube you can find birds specific to aquatic areas such as Oie rieuse, Cygne tuberculé, Tadorne casarca ,Tadorne de Belon, Grèbe huppé, Grand Cormoran, Pélican blanc, Héron cendré, Grande Aigrette, Panure à moustaches, Phragmite des joncs, but also birds specific to clay banks and steppe areas such as Guêpier d'Europe, Rollier d'Europe, and Étourneau sansonnet. Very often you can observe different birds of prey like Faucon crécerelle and Aigle botté. But also night birds like Chevêche d'Athéna. There are certainly many other bird species living in the area that I'm forgetting now or that I have not encountered myself.

Depending on the season and even the time of day, depending on the weather that day, you can encounter a multitude of different species but also spectacular landscapes, whether you choose sunset or sunrise or a moonlit night.

Accès

Macin Branch - Old Danube is located 30 km southeast of the city of Brǎila. The area is accessible only by motor vehicle or bicycle, it is located a few km from the settlements in the area but there are obstacles such as watercourses, hills and valleys. The area deserves to be allocated a lot of time and several visits, in different seasons. There is no organized tourism, you can often meet fishermen visiting the area along the Danube. The area is particularly hot in summer when I experienced temperatures of 42-46 degrees C and very windy in winter. There is no development and no accommodation or restaurant facilities in the immediate vicinity.

Taking photos from a vehicle is recommended, preferably a 4x4 vehicle. The area is also very suitable for using hiding devices or wearing camouflage clothing, with the disadvantage of high summer temperatures and millions of insects.
