Sant Mateu Forest is located at Serralada Litoral Park, and the landscape is dominated by Mediterranean forest (Holly oak, pubescent oak, Aleppo pine) and garrigue (Erica and Cistus shrubs). The place is good for watching Mediterranean forest species, like Fauvette passerinette , Pouillot de Bonelli , and Hypolaïs polyglotte.

Woodpeckers are present in the area all year: Pic épeiche , Pic épeichette , and Pic de Sharpe, as are tits: Mésange charbonnière , Mésange bleue , Mésange noire ,Mésange huppée , Mésange à longue queue. Also Sittelle torchepot is easily heard and seen. At night, Chouette hulotte and Engoulevent d'Europe can be heard.

In summer some interesting species include Martinet à ventre blanc , Guêpier d'Europe , Loriot d'Europe , Hirondelle rustique , and Rossignol philomèle. During migration, interesting species like Pie-grièche à tête rousse , Rougequeue à front blanc , Tarier des prés , Pouillot fitis , and Gobemouche noir are present in the area.

Sant Mateu Forest is located at Serralada Litoral Park, about 30 km northeast of Barcelona. The area can only be reached by car. The area is best explorer on foot, and it takes around 2 hours to make the circular walk.

To visit the site, park the car in the parking site. Press P on the map for directions to the parking. From the parking walk in the direction of Sant Mateu spring. In the spring the deciduous trees here are good to look for Pic épeichette , Sittelle torchepot and Hypolaïs polyglotte. Then continue direction to Sant Mateu church. The open areas around this section are good for birds for open landscapes. Continue following the path to the main road, and the walk back to the parking site. The route shown on the map is about 2.4 km.

The area is very hot in summer, and the best time to visit in the early morning. During the weekend there are a lot of people. So if you decide to visit in the weekend it is better to be there in the early morning.
