The River Adur flows South from the South Downs to the English Channel at Shoreham-by Sea in West Sussex.

Description

(*1). (press STARS on map) Upper estuary area, locally called 'Cuckoo Corner'. In Winter Martin-pêcheur d'Europe Râle d'eau, Vanneau huppé and Pluvier doré can be expected. Surrounding fields can have Bruant proyer, whilst both Hirondelle rustique and Hirondelle de fenêtre are present often being chased by Faucon hobereau late in the season.

(*2). Adur Estuary, surrounded on all sides by footpaths, use Adur Recreation Ground Car Park (free). During Autumn/Winter/Spring Huîtrier pie, Chevalier gambette, Grand Gravelot, Tournepierre à collier, Bécasseau variable, the occasional Avocette élégante, Pluvier argenté, Chevalier aboyeur, Barge rousse, Barge à queue noire, Courlis corlieu (Spring) and Courlis cendré.

(*3). RSPB Adur Estuary, is a NO access reserve, view from surrounding roads and footpaths. High Spring Tides move birds off this reserve. Check through Gull flocks carefully, Mouette mélanocéphale are often to be found amongst Mouette rieuse here, both Goéland leucophée and Goéland pontique have been seen.

(*4). Shoreham Fort, use the car park (free) and explore the river mouth and out to sea. Bécasseau violet are often mixed in with the Tournepierre à collier. Their favourite spot is on the wooden pier. Fou de Bassan can be seen, sometimes at long distance though.

(*5). Southwick Ship Canal. Birds often shelter here during stormy weather. View from lock gates at Western End or A259 road on Northern side, BE AWARE the beach near the car park (free) is A DESIGNATED NATURISTS BEACH.

(*6). The Beaches, West of Shoreham Fort is good for birds, unfortunately often disturbed by dog walkers.

(*7). Widewater Lagoon. The car park (fee payable) here is right next to the brackish lagoon. Bernache cravant, Sarcelle d'hiver and occasionally Harle bièvre can be found in Winter. The margins of the Lagoon can have Huîtrier pie, Grand Gravelot and Chevalier gambette, occasionally Bécasseau maubèche, Bécasseau minute and Petit Gravelot turn up here.
