Description
Ambersham Common is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Mostly composed of heathland, a rare habitat in West Sussex, surrounded on all sides by deciduous but mostly coniferous woodland. As with most heathland the dominant plants are Heather (Calluna) and Gorse (Ulex) with Birch (Betula) trees and scrubland, the area supports a good number of species such as Engoulevent d'Europe, Fauvette pitchou, Tarier pâtre Faucon hobereau, Bruant jaune, Pouillot fitis, Fauvette des jardins, Pouillot véloce, Fauvette à tête noire, Gobemouche gris, Coucou gris, Épervier d'Europe and Sittelle torchepot, the large areas of conifer/deciduous trees attract Sizerin cabaret, Bec-croisé des sapins, Tarin des aulnes and both Roitelet triple-bandeau and Roitelet huppé.
NOTE the marked route on map (3 km) concentrates on the largest heathland area and immediate surrounding woodland, those with more time can explore numerous paths outside of this area.

The A272 running between Petworth (to the East) and Easeborne (just to the North West) is just to the North of the site. From Easeborne head South West on A272 signed Chichester/Medhurst A286, after mini roundabout road changes to A286, continue through Midhurst on A286. On A286 turn Left at sign Heyshott/Graffham/South Ambersham, this road called Bex Lane and then Mill Lane soon passes through woodland. At next crossroads turn Left at sign for Ambersham (Note sign is on grass island with Red Post Box), this road now called New Road continues through woodland and the car park is on the Left amongst trees down a short gravel/sandy track.
