Description
Once known as one of the deepest open cast coal mines in the country reaching a depth of 250 feet, Anglers Country Park has since flourished into a beautiful haven for wildlife including many migratory birds. The Park is designated a Site of Scientific Interest and has a variety of woodland, a central lake surrounded by grassland, and a wetland area known as the ‘Pol’ (1). The west side of the lake also has 'The Shallows' (2). This variety of habitats is perfect for bird watching, including several bird hides strategically placed around the park for spotting migratory birds and wintering wildfowl. Birds you can observe include Oie cendrée, Oie à bec court, Cygne tuberculé, Canard chipeau, Canard siffleur, Canard souchet, Garrot à oeil d'or, Grèbe huppé, Bécassine des marais, Chevalier guignette, Sterne pierregarin, Bouscarle de Cetti, Phragmite des joncs and Bruant des roseaux.

Anglers Country Park is located 4 miles south-east of Wakefield. It has a car park and a cafe and you can make a circular walk around the lake. Press P on the map for directions to the car park. Parking is available with parking charges applicable. The two-mile path around the lake is both wheelchair and pushchair friendly and the park is also a starting point to the network of footpaths and trails to explore the wider countryside - enjoy a woodland walk or follow the Barnsley Canal towpath.
