Description
Duddingston Loch is the only example of a natural freshwater loch in the city of Edinburgh. It is an important site for breeding and wintering wildfowl and includes areas of mixed woodland, scrub, grassland and reedbeds. The Bawsinch and Duddingston Nature Reserve has water birds in plenty, as well as a large colony of Héron cendré that can be seen nesting in tree tops in spring. Among the birds that can be seen are Râle d'eau, Grèbe huppé, Fuligule morillon, Cygne tuberculé, Grèbe castagneux, Phragmite des joncs, Rousserolle effarvatte, and Fauvette à tête noire. A large number of wildfowl also winter here like Oie à bec court, Canard chipeau, Sarcelle d'hiver and Garrot à oeil d'or. Otters can be seen too, if you are lucky.

Car park at Duddingston Loch, 2 min walk down steps to edge of water. Bus (Lothian 42) stops nearby. Alternatively, walk from Edinburgh City Centre through Holyrood Park (30-45 min from foot of Royal Mile). Northern shore is open all year round. Access to the southern shore is by prior arrangement with the Scottish Wildlife Trust (see link below).
