Description
Chailey Common is one of the largest commons in the south of England and includes Red House Common, Memorial Common, Romany Ridge Common, Pound Common and Lane End. The area stretches over 180 hectares. Chailey Common is dominated by heathers and has lots of heathland birds and birds of prey. The heather and gorse provide a habitat for many birds including Pic épeiche, Milan royal, Chouette hulotte, Faucon crécerelle, Tarier pâtre, Bruant jaune and Linotte mélodieuse. Engoulevent d'Europe and Faucon hobereau are also regular summer visitors. The commons are home to several native adders and common lizards with many small ponds providing homes for a variety of amphibians.

There is a car park but the area is best explored on foot. Chailey Common is open access land, but to minimise disturbance to wildlife it is better to keep to the footpaths. The suggested circular walk on the map is about 4 km long.
