Description
Lower Hartshay and the Cromford Canal support a wide range of birds throughout the year. Épervier d'Europe are often seen hunting over the village and surrounding fields, while Buse variable soar overhead and the occasional Milan royal drifts through. Héron cendré regularly feed along the reedbeds and canal edges, with Bergeronnette des ruisseaux picking insects from the water margins. Mésange à longue queue move through the trees in busy family parties, and Bouscarle de Cetti are frequently heard calling from dense reedbeds.
Autumn and winter bring an increase in wildfowl and passage birds, with Bernache du Canada , Oie cendrée , Canard colvert , Sarcelle d'hiver and Canard siffleur using the canal and nearby waters. Vanneau huppé , Bécassine des marais and Râle d'eau may appear in wetter areas, while Mouette rieuse , Goéland argenté and Goéland brun gather on open water and fields. Thrushes are a highlight at this time of year, with Grive mauvis and Grive litorne arriving from the continent alongside resident Grive musicienne and Grive draine. Mixed tit flocks, Roitelet huppé , Chardonneret élégant , Tarin des aulnes and Sizerin flammé are regular, and corvids including Choucas des tours , Corbeau freux , Pie bavarde and Geai des chênes are ever-present.
Spring and summer see the area come alive with breeding birds and migrants. Martinet noir , Hirondelle rustique and Hirondelle de fenêtre feed low over the canal and reedbeds, often joined by hunting Faucon hobereau in warm weather. Reedbeds hold Rousserolle effarvatte , Phragmite des joncs and Bouscarle de Cetti , while Fauvette babillarde and Pouillot véloce sing from scrub and hedgerows. Bergeronnette des ruisseaux , Gallinule poule-d'eau , Foulque macroule , Mésange bleue and Mésange charbonnière regularly breed along the canal, and Alouette des champs can be heard over nearby fields. Occasional highlights include Sizerin cabaret Locustelle tachetée , Courlis cendré and Faucon crécerelle.
Overall, this short walk offers excellent habitat diversity and rewarding birding in all seasons, with something new to see throughout the year.

Cromford Canal and Lower Hartshay are located just west of Ripley. There’s no official parking, but on-road parking is possible. Please be mindful of local houses and park considerately. Press P on the map for directions.
