Description

Grindon Lough is the smallest and shallowest of four natural loughs located in the Hadrian’s Wall area. The Lough can be viewed from the road and is a good site for waterfowl especially in winter. A number of geese can regularly be viewed including Bernache du Canada, Oie cendrée, Oie à bec court, and (sadly, now rarely) Greenland Oie rieuse. Cygne chanteur also use the lake, as do a range of dabbling ducks, primarily Sarcelle d'hiver, Canard souchet, Canard siffleur and Canard colvert, and a few diving ducks, mainly Fuligule morillon and Garrot à oeil d'or. Wading species include breeding Bécasseau variable, Bécassine des marais, and Chevalier gambette; wintering Pluvier doré, and passage Barge à queue noire are commonly observed. Other key species to watch out for include Busard Saint-Martin, Buse variable, Faucon crécerelle, Grand Corbeau and Alouette des champs.

Recent rarities have included Phalarope à bec étroit (a single summering bird annually since 2015), Canard d'Amérique (a single drake present most of the time since late 2015), though sadly neither have returned in 2023; and longer ago, an inland Harelde boréale.

Muckle Moss National Nature Reserve, an area of Birch bog woodland along the road just to the southwest, holds good numbers of Sizerin cabaret and Tarin des aulnes all year, occasional Sizerin flammé in winter, and in summer, Coucou gris, Pipit des arbres and Pouillot fitis.
