Description

Prior to the 1980s birdwatching at Kingsmill Lake was not as easy as it is today. During Winter two separate birdwatching cruises used to take place, the old Caradon Field and Natural History Society, usually led by the late Steve Madge (a renowned local birder), or by the co-founder of the BBC Natural History Unit Plymouth born Tony Soper (these never take place now). Or you could use the route (as today) of parking at Landulph Church walking to the Northern shore of Kingsmill Lake or using Bridlepath/footpath and along narrow roads mostly used by farm machinery and livestock, with high hedges and the occasional field entrance (check over fields). You should be able to add Bouvreuil pivoine, Effraie des clochers (early morning or late afternoon), Faisan de Colchide, Caille des blés (heard more than seen), Perdrix rouge and the increasingly rare Perdrix grise. This area can produce what I would call 'old school' birding at it's best.
