Landulph Church - Kingsmill Lake and Area is just North of Saltash in South East Cornwall.
Prior to the 1980s birdwatching at Kingsmill Lake was not as easy as it is today. During Winter two separate birdwatching cruises used to take place, the old Caradon Field and Natural History Society, usually led by the late Steve Madge (a renowned local birder), or by the co-founder of the BBC Natural History Unit Plymouth born Tony Soper (these never take place now). Or you could use the route (as today) of parking at Landulph Church walking to the Northern shore of Kingsmill Lake or using Bridlepath/footpath and along narrow roads mostly used by farm machinery and livestock, with high hedges and the occasional field entrance (check over fields). You should be able to add Bouvreuil pivoine, Effraie des clochers (early morning or late afternoon), Faisan de Colchide, Caille des blés (heard more than seen), Perdrix rouge and the increasingly rare Perdrix grise. This area can produce what I would call 'old school' birding at it's best.
The main A38 road runs to the South, running from Plymouth (to the immediate East) and Liskeard (far to the West). If traveling from Plymouth on A38, cross Tamar suspension bridge (fee payable Eastwards only) towards Saltash (NOTE overhead gantry lights, lane priorities can change depending on traffic flow), STAY IN LANE, continue through Saltash Tunnel noting overhead gantry lights. At next roundabout (traffic light controlled) take third exit signed Callington/St Mellion A388, (*A) at next smaller roundabout follow signs to Callington/St Mellion/Carkeel A388, almost immediately at next roundabout follow signs to Launceston/Callington/St Mellion/Cotehele still A388. At next roundabout in small village of Hatt continue straight on signed Launceston/Callington A388, continue on this road and take second Right signed Landulph/Cargreen, at next junction turn Right signed Cargreen/Landulph, note road gets progressively narrower from here on, on arriving at hamlet of Landulph continue straight on signed Landulph Church (Note: ignore Methodist Church sign). Continue on this even narrower road until reaching Landulph Church and park on Left beside church. If traveling from Liskeard direction on A38, at Trerulefoot roundabout take first exit signed Saltash/Landrake/Tideford, pass straight through Landrake and Tideford, on reaching outskirts of Saltash at roundabout (traffic light controlled) take first exit signed Tamar View Ind Est./Cotehele A388 and follow from (*A) above.
BE WARNED - DO NOT STRAY FROM PATH FROM CHURCH TO KINGSMILL LAKE, see warning signs on gate. For other views of Kingsmill Lake (see separate entry).
