Marden Quarry local nature reserve has mature woodland and limestone grassland, virtually the only exposure of magnesium limestone north of the River Tyne. A large wildfowl lake supporting breeding birds such as the Cygne tuberculé, Canard colvert, Foulque macroule, and Gallinule poule-d'eau. Other common birds you can observe in the area include Oie cendrée, Bernache du Canada, Canard chipeau, Fuligule milouin, Pigeon ramier, Grive litorne, Grive mauvis, Roitelet huppé, Mésange à longue queue, Pic épeiche and Martinet noir.
The natural cover provided here, only half a mile from the coast, can also attract migrants/vagrants. This has in the past included Roselin cramoisi, Pouillot verdâtre, Pouillot boréal, Gobemouche nain and Pouillot à grands sourcils.
