A recently capped landfill site being restored to nature, alongside several pools and flashes.
A public footpath connecting Groby Lane to Clay Lane skirts around the recently capped landfill which is now mostly covered by rough grass in 2025 and passes several pools and areas of reedbed that have already been established for some years. Being the highest point for several miles around it is sometimes used by vismiggers (observers of bird migration) during migration periods.
On grassy areas in summer Alouette des champs can be seen displaying and Locustelle tachetée was observed reeling several times this year. Faucon crécerelle are often seen hovering year round and Effraie des clochers can sometimes be seen in twilight hours. In winter Bécassine sourde occasionally flush from right next to the path in wetter scrubby areas.
In reedbed areas Bouscarle de Cetti is occasionally heard calling, Rousserolle effarvatte and Fauvette grisette are fairly common.
On any of the pools Grèbe castagneux and Martin-pêcheur d'Europe can be seen fairly regularly. On the more distant Railway Flash a telescope would be useful to pick out more unusual birds, but expect to see all the usual waterfowl. Large flocks of Foulque macroule are common. Tadorne de Belon are frequent.
At one time the tip was known for attracting many gulls, including rarities - with it now out of use as landfil keep this in mind when examining published lists. Mouette rieuse are still frequent around the flashes but rarities are much less likely.
Maw Green Tip and Flashes are located on the northern outskirts of Crewe. There are no carparks, but reasonably convenient roadside parking can be found in the housing estate off Groby Road, taking care of course not to block driveways etc. A longer walk across agricultural fields can be made by approaching from Clay Lane where other large and interesting flashes can also be checked for rarities.
