Description

Prees Heath Common was purchased by the charity in 2006, a major restoration project is now well underway to convert 60 acres from airfield/agriculture and re-establish more natural heathland and grassland habitat.

Early summer is a good time to visit when displaying Alouette des champs are abundant, Bruant jaune is also likely as are finches, Linotte mélodieuse, Tarier pâtre, etc. Fauvette des jardins and Fauvette grisette are frequent as well as more common warblers such as Pouillot véloce. Faucon hobereau has been reported but does not seem particularly frequent, Faucon crécerelle and Buse variable are more likely.

Accès

Prees Heath Common is located just south of Whitchurch in north Shropshire, between the A41 and A49 roads. The entire site is open access, so visitors can walk wherever they wish, however paths have been established through regular walking along the edges and up the middle. It is best to stick to these especially in breeding season to protect the ground nesting birds.

There is a small car park indicated on the map, but alternative pay-and-display parking is available at the truckstop just north of the reserve. The fish and chips shop there is also good, achieved a 5 star food hygeine rating in 2022, and has toilets. Press a P on the map for directions to a car park.
