Description
Tucked away in Leicestershire, the Reedbed Nature Reserve at Watermead Country Park consists of four hides, one of which looks over the fabulous Wanlip Meadows. In winter, Râle d'eau and with a little bit of luck Butor étoilé can be seen stalking in the extensive reedbeds there. Sizerin flammé, various Tits and Tarin des aulnes will visit the feeders from the Kingfisher Hide. Martin-pêcheur d'Europe can also be viewed from most of the hides.
Spring announces the arrival of waders and the marshier area of the River Soar, viewed from the Plover Hide is great for Bécassine des marais and Chevalier gambette. Other waders such as Bécasseau variable, Courlis cendré and Huîtrier pie can also be seen around the reserve. Sterne pierregarin, Hirondelle de rivage, Hirondelle de fenêtre, Hirondelle rustique and Martinet noir all fly around the reserve in spring and summer, with the Hirondelle de rivage nesting in the bank for them. Autumn is quite an interesting month for migration for more waders such as Chevalier aboyeur, Chevalier culblanc, Chevalier guignette, Avocette élégante and Petit Gravelot can be viewed from around the reserve.
