Rowney Wood is a large ancient wood that was planted up with conifers in the 1950s but has now mostly been returned to native deciduous woodland. A few interesting birds seen include Perdrix grise, Milan royal, Grand Corbeau, Chouette hulotte, Effraie des clochers, Mésange nonnette, Sittelle torchepot, Perdrix rouge, Bruant jaune and Roitelet huppé. It does not get too busy with people walking around so good chance to see birds and other wildlife.

Rowney Wood is located south of the town of Saffron Walden. The car park is opposite the gate entrance for the airfield at carver barracks. It has parking available off main road. Press P on the map for directions. It is a small walk to the entrance of the forest on a gravel track. Best explored on foot and there is a circular route that is gravel. Can be muddy in wet conditions. Walk can be easily done in 1 hour with lots of smaller trails to explore. The 3,5 km circular route indicated on the map is just a suggestion.
