One of the best wetland sites in Wales, with over wintering birds including thousands of Étourneau sansonnet coming in to roost, but all year round good birding.
Teifi Marshes reserve is situated on the floor of the wide pre-glacial channel left by the former course of the Teifi and now occupied by the river Piliau, which meanders through the marshes in a narrow but deceptively deep cut. A range of habitats is supported, from open pasture and well wooded hedgerows, through Alder and Willow carr, freshwater marsh with open pools and reedbeds to tidal mudbanks. Flooding is extensive in winter, when the area attracts large numbers of wildfowl, notably Sarcelle d'hiver, Canard siffleur and Canard colvert. Râle d'eau are present in winter in considerable numbers, and other regular winter visitors include Bécassine des marais, Courlis cendré and Vanneau huppé. Faucon pèlerin hunt over the marshes. Breedings birds include Tadorne de Belon, Rousserolle effarvatte, Phragmite des joncs, Fauvette grisette, Fauvette babillarde and Bouscarle de Cetti. Herons also breed nearby. You may be very lucky and see a Butor étoilé. Check out the “Creek” and “Kingfisher” Hides for ducks, Martin-pêcheur d'Europe and Bouscarle de Cetti , the “Curlew” Hide for Héron cendré, Courlis cendré and larger gulls. The “Heron or Pentwd” Hide is good for Sarcelle d'hiver, Canard siffleur, Chevalier culblanc, Chevalier gambette and has a good view over the whole marsh.
Parking is available in the Visitor Centre car park on the southern side of the reserve (SN186448). Follow the signs out of Cardigan towards Cilgerran. On entering the village a left turn gives access to the Teifi Marshes Reserve along the old railway line. Look out for Sika Deer in the fields on the right. There is also pedestrian or cycle access from Cardigan along the riverside path from the Old Cardigan Bridge. The Visitor Information Centre on the reserve has a gift-shop and café. There is a circular walk around the marshes (the Otter Trail) with 6 hides. The Otter Trail takes about 1 ½ hours to walk, heading from the Centre / car park along the old railway line.
Although closer to Cardigan, is also known as 'Cilgerran Wildlife Centre' and 'Welsh Wildlife Centre'.
