The cliffs themselves and the surrounding chalk grasslands make a unique habitat found in few other places, while the proximity to the continent makes it a popular resting spot for rarities from across the channel. Nesting birds can include Faucon pèlerin, Grand Corbeau, Fulmar boréal and even Mouette tridactyle. Divers and auks can be seen off the coast in winter, and it is not unusual for rarities to appear: Torcol fourmilier, Pouillot de Pallas, Merle à plastron and the occasional shrike.
