Description
Witton Lakes are in the Stockland Green area of Birmingham. The two lakes are former drinking water reservoirs. The larger lake is used for boating and the smaller shallower lake is dedicated to wildlife. On the Northern side of the lakes is Witton Lakes Eco Hub, which has a cafe and toilets. The park has open grassland, wooded areas and wildflower meadows, numerous streams lead in and out of the lakes and a community orchard had been planted. The park has a very active friends group.
(*1) (press STAR on map), check large lake in Winter for Canard siffleur, Canard chipeau and good numbers of Grèbe castagneux. Lower fish numbers mean Grèbe huppé are only in low numbers, Cygne tuberculé numbers can be very high for a inner city location and Garrot à oeil d'or and Harle bièvre occasionally turn up.
(*2), the smaller lake can have Sarcelle d'hiver, Canard souchet, Gallinule poule-d'eau, Foulque macroule and Héron cendré though there is a lot of movement of ducks between each lake. A number of different species of Gull (Laridae) have been seen including Goéland cendré and unusually for such an inland site Mouette tridactyle.
(*3), the area of trees at the Eastern end of the park has Tarin des aulnes and Mésange noire, Mésange à longue queue, Mésange bleue and Mésange charbonnière are numerous. During Spring/Summer Fauvette grisette, Pouillot fitis, Pouillot véloce, Fauvette à tête noire, Hirondelle de fenêtre, Hirondelle rustique and Martinet noir can be seen. Sterne pierregarin regularly turn up on passage.
