This park with 2,5 miles of paved trails that cross native and restored prairies, wetlands, ponds, and woodlands, is one of the best birding spots in Wichita.
Chisholm Creek Park is centered around the natural flow of Chisholm Creek. The park preserves native vegetation and provides habitat for local wildlife. Its features represent the major habitat types in the Great Plains. The park consists of 282 acres and has prairies, wetlands, hedgerows, ponds, and woodlands and a network of paved and natural trails that follow the creek.
Although the park is surrounded on all sides by developed areas, over 240 species of birds have been recorded in the park. Breeding birds include Indigo Bunting, Cooper's Hawk, Dickcissel, Yellow-billed Cuckoo and Bell's Vireo.
The more common birds you can spot include Wood Duck, Wild Turkey, Black-crowned Night Heron, Killdeer, Snowy Egret, Mississippi Kite, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Brown Thrasher and American Goldfinch. Chisholm Creek Park is also a good spot to find herons, warblers, wrens and sparrows. Less common birds that have been observed in the park include Bay-breasted Warbler, Hooded Warbler, Cape May Warbler, MacGillivray's Warbler, Golden-winged Warbler, Least Bittern and Virginia Rail.
Chisholm Creek Park sits on the northeast side of Wichita. The park is just off North Oliver Avenue, near the K‑96 bypass. From downtown Wichita head north on I‑135, take the K‑96 eastbound exit, then exit at Oliver. The park entrances are just south of the highway. Press P on the map for directions to the main parking lot.
Right at the entrance of the park sits the Great Plains Nature Center, a gateway to the natural beauty and ecosystems of the Great Plains region. It serves as both an educational facility and a nature preserve, dedicated to fostering appreciation and understanding of local wildlife, plants, and habitats. Inside the center, visitors can explore interactive exhibits featuring native animals, birds, and plants. The center also offers guided nature walks. Opening hours Mon-Fri: 9am- 4pm (Gift shop: 10am-4pm), Sat: 10am-2pm , Closed Sundays and all Federal Holidays. Entrance is free of charge. For more info see the link to GPNC below.
