East Rock Park in New Haven is one of the best spring migrant traps in New England.
The 425-acre park surrounds and includes the mountainous ridge named East Rock and was developed with naturalistic landscaping. The summit of East Rock Park rises more than 350 feet above the floor of the Mill River valley at its base. Views from the clifftops span metropolitan New Haven, Long Island Sound, and Long Island. As with many other famous migration spots, East Rock Park serves as an urban oasis for hungry and tired passerines.
A good area to check out during spring migration is the trail along the Mill River (1) where you can find water-loving rarities such as Prothonotary Warbler and Kentucky Warbler, and the more common Wilson's Warbler, Canada Warbler and Northern Waterthrush. Also interesting is Trowbridge Drive (2), a paved road through tall hardwoods where you can find Bay-breasted Warbler, Blackburnian Warbler and Cape May Warbler. Other interesting spots to check out are the Giant Steps (3) and the Archery Field (4). Due to the dry, scrubby habitat of Archery Field there you have a chance of spotting Indigo Bunting, Blue-winged Warbler, and Nashville Warbler.
East Rock Park is located on the New Haven / Hamden border. The park is roughly bounded by Livingston Street, Davis Street, State Street and the Mill River. Directions to Summit: Entering East Rock Park from Davis Street, take the first left turn onto the Summit Drive. From the end of Orange Street, turn left onto Farnham Drive. Follow to first right. This is Summit Drive. The Park is closed sunset to sunrise. The lower drives are open all year. Public transport: Park can be reached by taking, any bus that travels on State Street, Orange Street or Whitney Avenue.
The park is open year-round to hikers and walkers. There are several parkings. Press a P on the map for directions to a parking. At College Woods, where plenty of parking is available, as well as picnic facilities and bathrooms, you can park on the street or in the school lot if it’s a weekend or after school hours.
