This road is a birding hotspot in the state of Mississippi, especially for waterbirds, raptors, and migratory bird species.
Pipeline Road in Madison County, runs through the Pearl River Waterfowl Refuge and Wildlife Management Area, northeast of Jackson, and has recorded well over 230 bird species. The gravel track cuts through a mosaic of wetlands, hardwood forests, shrub swamps, and freshwater ponds. Because it borders the Pearl River and the north shore of the Ross Barnett Reservoir, it offers a wide range of habitats in a relatively compact area. You can explore the road by slowly driving and stopping at promising spots to scan the marshes and tree lines.
In winter, large numbers of ducks, geese, and herons gather in the flooded areas. Species like Anhinga, American White Pelican, Bald Eagle, Great Egret and Wood Duck are regularly seen. During migration, the area becomes a corridor for warblers, vireos, and tanagers, while summer brings breeding birds such as Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Prothonotary Warbler, and Mississippi Kite. Other breeding birds include King Rail, Purple Gallinule, Least Bittern, Red-headed Woodpecker, Kentucky Warbler, Yellow-throated Warbler, Painted Bunting and Summer Tanager.
Pipeline Road is located in just northeast of Jackson. The main access point is off Highway 43, near the north shore of the Ross Barnett Reservoir, between the Natchez Trace Parkway and the Pearl River. Press P on the map for directions.
Access requires a Wildlife Management Area permit from the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks, which can be purchased online (see the link below) or at license vendors. The road is well maintained, but conditions can vary after heavy rains, so visitors should be prepared for muddy stretches.
