A (former) water recharge facility, but one that has recorded more than 300 bird species!
Sweetwater Wetlands is a 60-acre urban wildlife refuge in Tucson. Originally commisioned in 1996, this water treatment facility was replaced by a new facility just up the road. Fortunately, the Sweetwater Wetlands remain a wonderful area for birders and nature lovers alike. It is home to not only more than 300 bird species but also to several other animals, such as Javelinas, Racoons and Bobcats.
Bird species you might encounter here include Green Heron, Cooper's Hawk, Prairie Falcon, Canvasback, Lesser Yellowlegs, Cassin's Vireo, Horned Lark, Curve-billed Thrasher, Northern Parula, Prothonotary Warbler, Abert's Towhee, and Spotted Towhee.
Located right within Tucson city limits, a stone’s throw from Interstate I-10, lies this hidden gem. Getting there could not be any easier: simply take the El Camino del Cerro West exit from I-10 and go south on the access road until you turn right onto W Sweetwater Dr. You will see the wetland’s parking lot on your left after a while. Press P on the map for directions.
The wetlands are accessible to the public from dawn to dusk. The property is open access and includes a number of different walkways and boardwalks. The terrain is as flat as a pancake, so not much of a challenge here. The full circuit is less than 1.5 miles.
