Description

The Tchefuncte River Mouth in Madisonville contains a nice sample of south Lousiana habitats in a short distance. The route includes small town residentail and ball fields. Continuing the road follows the Tchefuncte River edge between river views and marsh. It ends with a boat launch giving excellent views of the river mouth and Lake Pontchartrain. The boat launch conveniently allows views of trees, scrub, marsh, river mouth and lake from one spot.

In winter Swamp Sparrow, Marsh Wren can be seen along the marsh area as well as egrets, herons and gulls along the river side. Northern Harrier and Bald Eagle can be present over the marsh. Wooded areas at either end of the path may have Palm Warbler, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Eastern Phoebe, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, and Blue-grey Gnatcatcher. Bufflehead, Lesser Scaup are common at the lake and river mouth.

Summer birds include Eastern Kingbird, Barn Swallow, Cliff Swallow, Green Heron, Purple Martin and Black-bellied Whistling-Duck. Osprey and Common Yellowthroat occur all year.
