Description

Let’s be honest: nobody goes to Porto Jofre only for birding. After all, this is the world’s prime place for Jaguar sightings, which you are almost guaranteed to have along the banks of adjacent Rio São Lourenço. There is plenty of other non-bird wildlife by this river, as well, from Caimans and Capybaras to Giant Otters and Anacondas.

However, many bird species are also found here. Near the lodges, you are likely to see Hyacinth Macaw, Toco Toucan and Crested Oropendola, to name a few. Bird species found along the river include Boat-billed Heron, Striated Heron, Ringed Kingfisher, Bare-faced Ibis, Osprey, Crane Hawk, Yellow-billed Tern and Black Skimmer.

Access

Located at the end of the Transpantaneira Park Road, 250 km south of Cuiabá, in the Northern Pantanal, which corresponds to the south of the state of Mato Grosso, in the Center-West region of Brazil, Porto Jofre consists of a few lodges in different price categories, plus a campground or two. Departing from Cuiabá, it is 100 km of asphalt to Poconé and 150 km of dirt road from there to the end of the road. You won’t need a 4x4, but be warned that the Transpantaneira can be very dusty. Other options to get there are on one of the many tours offered, or by charter plane from Cuiabá to the small Porto Jofre airstrip.

Exploring the river requires hiring a boat, which tends to be expensive here. Most boats go out in the morning for 4 or 5 hours, then again mid-afternoon, but all-day tours are also available. All boat tours go northeast on Rio São Lourenço, sometimes branching off into Rio Piquiri.
