Description

Holme Pierrepont consists of a wide range of habitats, including reed beds, lakes, ponds, grasslands and woodlands. The most productive are the sixteen waterbodies. The best areas for birding are Blotts Pit (1), the A52 Pit (2), Works Pond (3) and Regatta Lake (4). Resident birds include Kis vöcsök, Búbos vöcsök, Guvat, Gyöngybagoly, Zöld küllo, Nagy fakopáncs and Berki poszáta. An interesting summer visitor is Kabasólyom and in winter Holme Pierrepont is a good site for Kis bukó. During spring an autumn migration lots of passage waders can be spotted. The area is in general very good for ducks, swans and geese.

Lots of rarities have been recorded, including American Wigeon, Lesser Scaup, Long-tailed Duck, Fulmar, Manx Shearwater, Leach's Petrel, Glossy Ibis, Montagu's Harrier, American Golden Plover, Temminck's Stint, Purple Sandpiper, Pectoral Sandpiper, Lesser Yellowlegs, Pomarine Skua, Arctic Skua, Great Skua, Razorbill, Roseate Tern, Lapland Bunting and Snow Bunting.

Holme Pierrepont is located 2.5 miles southeast of Nottingham on the south side of the River Trent between the towns of West Bridgford & Radcliffe-on-Trent. There are many places to check out. Press a P on the map for directions to a parking spot. Best place to start is Blotts Pit. The circular walk around Blotts Pit is about 3,5 km. Blotts Pit has several bird viewing screens. If you have time left, you can check out the other areas.
