Description
The area is of great importance for breeding birds of semi-natural grasslands and wetlands. Around 80 species of breeding birds are recorded annually, including Fjöruspói, Vepja, Hvítstorkur , Dverggoði, Keldusvín, Kornhæna, Taumönd, Urtönd, Skeiðönd, Gargönd, Gunnfálki, Gaukur, Blábrystingur, Hagaskvetta, Sefsöngvari (rarely Síkjasöngvari and Reyrsöngvari) and Þyrnisvarri. Large flocks of Blesgæs use the area during winter, and also a small group of Fjallgæs from a rewilding project in Sweden has established a "tradition" to visit the area for wintering, starting in 2017. In late winter, the area serves as roosting place for hundreds of Grátrana and during spring migration, a great variety of ducks and waders can be encountered. Occasionally, rarities show up (e.g. Rauðhegri, Jarpönd, Flóðrella).
