Description
The reservoir is shallow, having only a maximum depth of 9m (30’), which makes it very attractive to both dabbling and diving ducks. It occasionally attracts less common wildfowl, such as Gulönd and Hrafnsönd and Sefgoði, Stargoði and Flórgoði. Waders are often present in spring and autumn, including Rúkragi, Trjástelkur, Hrossagaukur, Stelkur, Tjaldur and Vatnalóa. Scaling Dam can also be an excellent place to watch raptors and, from the hide, an eye should always be kept on the moorland plateau and valleys for Bláheiðir, Brúnheiðir, Smyrill and Förufálki and, if you are extremely lucky, Svölugleða or Fjallvákur. The site is also good for summer visitors, such as Gaukur, Vallskvetta and Laufsöngvari, and residents like Hagaskvetta, Straumerla and Trjáspör.
There is a hide for birdwatching where you might see Vepja, Grágæs, Kanadagæs, Álft and many wading birds.
