Description
Westwood Dam and Woodland is a hidden gem for birdwatching in Sheffield. The area has a variety of birds of prey including Músvákur, Förufálki, Turnfálki, Sparrhaukur, Náttugla and Kattugla. As well as this, the small streams and brooks found within the woodland support Straumerla territories, as well as small numbers of Grágrípur in the summer.
Winter migrants include Skógarþröstur and Gráþröstur, as well as the occasional flock of Silkitoppa. Summer sightings include migrant Laufsöngvari, Garðsöngvari, and Gransöngvari, as well as breeding Skógarsnípa territories. The open water of Westwood Dam and Reservoir can produce some surprises, including Álft in previous years. The woodland supported some of the city's last known pairs of Stubbspæta in the early 2000s.
