The Eksterheide is home to many rare plant and animal species, such as the Picchio nero, Succiacapre, Tottavilla, field cricket (Gryllus campestris), and a small butterfly species, the chequered skipper (Carterocephalus palaemon). These species depend on heathland or grassland. Because it's a heathland, you can spot bird species specific to this habitat.

Nederlands: De Eksterheide in Beerse is een natuurgebied van 200 hectare met heide, vennen, landduinen en bossen. Ideaal voor wandelen en natuurbeleving. Het gebied herbergt vele zeldzame planten- en diersoorten, zoals de Picchio nero, Succiacapre, Tottavilla, veldkrekel en een kleine dagvlindersoort, het bont dikkopje. Deze soorten zijn afhankelijk van heide of grasland. Het is heidegebied dus hier kan je dan ook specifieke vogelsoorten van deze biotoop zien.

The Eksterheide is located west of the town of Beerse. Entrance: Oostmalseweg (intersection with Klampovenstraat), 2340 Beerse. There is also an entrance along Klundert (entrance Zwaaikom or Kundert-Noord). Press P on the map for directions to a parking spot. The circular walk shown on the map is approximately 5 km.

Nederlands: De Eksterheide ligt ten westen van Beerse. Ingang : Oostmalseweg (kruising met Klampovenstraat), 2340 Beerse. Er is ook een ingang langs Klundert (toegang Zwaaikom of Kundert-Noord). Druk op P in de kaart voor een routebeschrijving naar een parkeerplek. Openbaar vervoer: Buslijn 410 'Turnhout-Beerse-Malle-Wijnegem-Antwerpen' of 490 'Aarschot-Turnhout' en stap af aan de halte Vlimmeren Engstraat. Via de nabijgelegen Klampovenstraat wandel je tot aan de Gemeenteheide, waar je de Eksterheide binnenwandelt via de toegang Oostmalseweg. De rondwandeling die is weergegeven op de kaart is ongeveer 5 km.

We visited this area in late October/early November and encountered only two hikers. It's a very peaceful area, especially at this time of year. There are two hides, and a third is under construction, and that location is truly stunning. This area is still developing and is actively managed. It will become a true gem in the future.

Nederlands: We bezochten dit gebied eind oktober, begin november en kwamen slechts twee wandelaars, met hond, tegen. Zeer rustig gebied, toch zeker in dit seizoen. Er zijn twee kijkhutten en de derde is in aanbouw en die locatie is echt een plaatje. Dit gebied is nog volop aan het groeien en wordt actief beheerd. Dit gaat op termijn een topper worden.
