Descrizione

The Prek Toal waterbird colonies are located in the north-western part of Tonlé Sap Lake, near Siem Reap. This area lies inside the protected Tonle Sap Biosphere Reserve and is internationally recognized as one of the most important breeding sites for large waterbirds in Southeast Asia. The landscape is dominated by freshwater swamp forest, and during the dry season it becomes a gathering point for many birds. The colonies are found in flooded forest habitats where thousands of birds nest in tall trees during the dry season. Birds you can observe include Asian Openbill, Painted Stork, Milky Stork, Lesser Adjutant, Greater Adjutant, Black-headed Ibis, Spot-billed Pelican, Black-winged Stilt, Oriental Darter, Blue-tailed Bee-eater, Grey-headed Fish-Eagle and several types of cormorants. More than 150 species have been recorded in the protected area.

Accesso

Prek Toal Waterbird Sanctuary is located, approximately 15 kilometers southeast of the town of Siem Reap. It is about a 30 minutes drive from Siem Reap to where the boat trips leave. The best time to see the colonies is December to May, when water levels are lower and birds gather in large numbers to breed. During this season, visitors can observe active nests, chicks, and large flocks flying over the forest.

Half day and full-day tours can be booked, including a boat ride across Tonle Sap and transfer to and from your hotel.
