Descrizione
Vardzia is a 12th‑century cave monastery complex. The site combines a great site with historical significance with birdwatching. Picchio muratore di roccia are numerous and a walk through the many rooms hacked into the stone face of the valley will result in hearing Verzellino fronterossa and Passero solitario. During Spring and Summer months, Rondone maggiore can be seen high above the valley. There are many nests of Rondine montana and Balestruccio along the rock faces and Coturnice orientale can be heard in the surroundings. During the winter months, Picchio muraiolo can be found on the cliff walls. Merlo acquaiolo are common along the Kura river.
There is some debate on the occurrence of Picchio muratore di roccia orientale in this area, so be the first to definitively prove its occurrence! A small lake (1) along the road to Vardzia is good for migrants during Spring migration with Cannaiola di Jerdon, Forapaglie castagnolo and many Tarabusino.
