The sand extraction area Azewijnse Broek consists of several sand extraction ponds with banks and surrounding terrains. The oldest part is a truly beautiful nature area with ponds, groves, islets, rugs and steep banks. Large parts of the area are surrounded by hedgerows, grasslands, ditches and bushes. Artificial islands have been built in the ponds to offer the Sterna comune a suitable breeding ground. However, the area is still in full development so that flora and fauna (reed / marsh banks, sandy soils) will always have new opportunities in the future.
Birds you can find in the breeding season include: Rampichino comune, Cannaiola verdognola, Bigiarella, Oca facciabianca, Cutrettola, Sterpazzola, Pigliamosche, Picchio rosso maggiore, Tordela, Passera scopaiola, Colombella, Colombaccio, Cannaiola, Corriere piccolo,Fanello, Cuculo, Migliarino di palude, Passera mattugia,Canapino maggiore, Luì piccolo,Beccafico, Pettegola, Allodola, Tortora selvatica, Codirosso spazzacamino, Capinera, Sterna comune.
Ducks (presumably nesting outside the area): Germano reale, Volpoca, Casarca, Moriglione, Canapiglia, Moretta. Special species during the spring migration and autumn migration: Piro piro piccolo, Piro piro culbianco and Combattente use the area as well as:Pittima reale, Pavoncella, Beccaccia di mare, Corriere piccolo, Sterna comune who occasionally breed in the area. We also see Falco pescatore and Cicogna bianca in the area.

Nederlands: Zandwingebied Azewijnse Broek bestaat uit meerdere zandwinplassen met oevers en omliggende terreinen. Het grootste gedeelte van de plassen waar geen zand of grind meer gewonnen wordt is grotendeels ingericht en er is in het oudste gedeelte een werkelijk prachtig natuurgebied ontstaan met : poelen, bosjes, eilandjes, ruigten en steile oevers voor eisvogel en oeverzwaluwen. Grote delen van het gebied zijn omgeven door meidoornhagen, graslanden, sloten en bosjes. In de plassen zijn ook reeds kunstmatige eilandjes aangelegd om de visdieven een geschikte broedplek aan te bieden.
Het gebied is echter ook nog steeds volop in ontwikkeling zodat flora en fauna, riet/moerasoevers, zandgronden ook toekomstig steeds nieuwe kansen zullen krijgen.
Vogels die je in de broedperiode kunt aantreffen zijn: Rampichino comune, Cannaiola verdognola, Bigiarella, Oca facciabianca, Cutrettola, Sterpazzola, Pigliamosche, Picchio rosso maggiore, Tordela, Passera scopaiola, Colombella, Colombaccio, Cannaiola, Corriere piccolo,Fanello, Cuculo, Migliarino di palude, Passera mattugia,Canapino maggiore, Luì piccolo,Beccafico, Pettegola, Allodola, Tortora selvatica, Codirosso spazzacamino, Capinera en Sterna comune.
Eenden (broeden vermoedelijk buiten het gebied): Germano reale, Volpoca, Casarca, Moriglione, Canapiglia, Moretta.
Roofvogels komen voor in het gebied maar broeden elders mogelijk door het gebrek aan geschikte mogelijkheden: Poiana, Gheppio, Sparviere, Falco di palude, Albanella reale, Lodolaio, Falco pellegrino.
Bijzondere soorten tijdens de voorjaarstrek en najaarstrek: Steltlopers als Piro piro piccolo,Piro piro culbianco en Combattente maken gebruik van het gebied evenals Pittima reale, Pavoncella, Beccaccia di mare, Corriere piccolo, Sterna comune die incidenteel broeden in het gebied. Ook de Falco pescatore en Cicogna bianca zien we in het gebied.

You can easily get there by car and there is ample parking space. The area is ideal for exploring on foot. The total walking trail as shown on the map is about 7 km.

Nederlands: Het Azewijnse Broek ligt tussen de dorpen Azewijn, Netterden, Gendringen en Lengel. Je kunt er met de auto gemakkelijk komen en er is voldoende parkeergelegenheid. Druk op P in de kaart voor een routebeschrijving. Het gebied is uitermate geschikt om wandelend te onderzoeken. De ingetekende route op de kaart is ongeveer 7 km.
