The Oisterwijkse Bossen en Vennen are a large and diverse nature reserve of approximately 1,500 hectares with expansive forests, heathlands, and many ponds. The area is home to a high level of biodiversity, with unique plants and various bird, amphibian, and insect species that inhabit this wet and wooded environment. The forests consist of a mix of deciduous and coniferous trees.
What kind of birds can you see? First and foremost, five species of woodpeckers. These are virtually all breeding species in the Netherlands: Picchio rosso maggiore, Picchio rosso mezzano, Picchio rosso minore, Picchio nero, and Picchio verde. If a Torcicollo lands in the area during the migration period, you've seen every woodpecker found in the Netherlands. In the woods and semi-open areas you can see and hear birds such as Corvo imperiale, Balia nera, Pigliamosche, Cuculo, Beccafico, Codirosso, Sterpazzola, Ciuffolotto, Regolo, Fiorrancino, Cincia dal ciuffo, Cincia mora, Codibugnolo, Picchio muratore and Rampichino comune.
You will find many water birds on the fens here. Tuffetto breeds and Cicogna bianca forages there regularly. Mestolone and Canapiglia float on the water and Martin pescatore hunts for fish from overhanging branches. In winter you can see winter visitors such as Lucherino, Peppola and Tordo sassello. Owls that live in the area include Allocco, Civetta and Gufo comune. And try sitting by one of the ponds on a summer evening. Who knows, you might see a Lodolaio hunting dragonflies. That is a spectacular scene, especially when there is no wind. Then you can hear the dragonflies crackling between the beak of the Lodolaio.

Nederlands: De Oisterwijkse Bossen en Vennen is een groot en afwisselend natuurgebied van ongeveer 1.500 hectare met uitgestrekte bossen, verscholen heideveldjes en sfeervolle vennen. Het gebied herbergt een grote biodiversiteit, met bijzondere planten zoals klokjesgentiaan en zonnedauw, en diverse vogelsoorten, amfibieën en insecten die in deze natte en bosrijke omgeving voorkomen. De bossen bestaan uit een mix van loof- en naaldbomen.
Welke vogels zie je zoal in de Oisterwijkse Bossen en Vennen? In de allereerste plaats vijf soorten spechten. Dat zijn zo ongeveer alle in Nederland broedende soorten: Picchio rosso maggiore, Picchio rosso mezzano, Picchio rosso minore, Picchio nero, en Picchio verde. Als tijdens de trekperiode een Torcicollo in het gebied neerstrijkt, heb je alle in Nederland voorkomende spechten gezien. In de bossen en op de half open terreinen zie en hoor je vogels als Corvo imperiale, Balia nera, Pigliamosche, Cuculo, Beccafico, Codirosso, Sterpazzola, Ciuffolotto, Regolo, Fiorrancino, Cincia dal ciuffo, Cincia mora, Codibugnolo, Picchio muratore en Rampichino comune.
Je vindt hier heel veel watervogels op de vennen. Tuffetto broedt er en de Cicogna bianca foerageert er regelmatig. Mestolone en Canapiglia dobberen op het water en de Martin pescatore jaagt vanaf overhangende takken op vis. In de winter kun je er wintergasten als Lucherino, Peppola en Tordo sassello zien. Gejaagd wordt er natuurlijk ook: door Allocco, Civetta en Gufo comune. En ga eens op een zomerse avond bij een van de vennen zitten. Wie weet zie je een Lodolaio jagen op libellen. Dat is een spectaculair tafereel. Zeker als het windstil is. Dan hoor je de libellen knisperen tussen de snavel van de Lodolaio.

The Oisterwijkse Bossen en Vennen are located south of the city of Tilburg, near the village of Oisterwijk, and are easily accessible by bicycle, car and public transport. The visitors centre is located on Van Tienhovenlaan in Oisterwijk. Press P on the map for directions to a car park. The circular walk shown on the map is approximately 5 km. But you can also choose a longer or shorter walk.

Nederlands: De Oisterwijkse Bossen en Vennen liggen ten zuiden van Tilburg, vlakbij het dorp Oisterwijk, en zijn goed bereikbaar met de fiets, auto en het openbaar vervoer. Het bezoekerscentrum ligt aan de Van Tienhovenlaan in Oisterwijk. Druk op P in de kaart voor een routebeschrijving naar een parkeerplaats. De rondwandeling die is weergegeven op de kaart is ongeveer 5 km. Maar je kunt ook een langere of kortere wandeling kiezen.
