Killingworth Lake has good numbers of commoner resident and wintering wildfowl, including Cigno reale, Oca selvatica, Oca canadese, Germano reale, Canapiglia, Moretta, Moriglione, Quattrocchi and Smergo maggiore, which on occasion attract scarcer species like Cigno selvatico, Oca zamperosee, Moretta grigia, Moretta tabaccata, and even occasional Pesciaiola. Because local people feed the birds, they become very tame, feeling safe in the presence of people. This sense of safety is soon picked up by visiting birds, making for good photo opportunities in normally unapproachable species. Even visiting Cormoranos pick up the 'bird safety' vibes and will allow close approach unusual for this typically very timid species.
The area around the lake is mostly mown grass, but there are also maturing areas of trees planted about 20-30 years ago, and some marginal reedbeds, which now attract Cannaiola regularly. Further management to attract birds has included the creation of vegetated rafts for breeding wildfowl and grebes.
