Set on the South Wales coast, Merthyr Mawr Nature Reserve is home to the highest dune in Wales, known as the Big Dipper. There are also grasslands, saltmarsh, beach and woods within the reserve. Recent highlights include: Piovanello comune, Avocetta, Piovanello violetto, Albanella reale, Nibbio reale, Astore, Albanella minore, Spioncello, Fiorrancino, Bigiarella and Tortora selvatica.

Park in Newton village in Porthcawl and walk through the dunes and along the beach (high disturbance on weekends). Also drive along the B4524 toward Ogmore by Sea. Visit the high tide wader roost at Newton Point in winter. Allow a half day at least to explore.
