Teifi Marshes

Wales  >  United Kingdom

One of the best wetland sites in Wales, with over wintering birds including thousands of Storno coming in to roost, but all year round good birding.

Descrizione

Teifi Marshes reserve is situated on the floor of the wide pre-glacial channel left by the former course of the Teifi and now occupied by the river Piliau, which meanders through the marshes in a narrow but deceptively deep cut. A range of habitats is supported, from open pasture and well wooded hedgerows, through Alder and Willow carr, freshwater marsh with open pools and reedbeds to tidal mudbanks. Flooding is extensive in winter, when the area attracts large numbers of wildfowl, notably Alzavola, Fischione and Germano reale. Porciglione are present in winter in considerable numbers, and other regular winter visitors include Beccaccino, Chiurlo maggiore and Pavoncella. Falco pellegrino hunt over the marshes. Breedings birds include Volpoca, Cannaiola, Forapaglie comune, Sterpazzola, Bigiarella and Usignolo di fiume. Herons also breed nearby. You may be very lucky and see a Tarabuso. Check out the “Creek” and “Kingfisher” Hides for ducks, Martin pescatore and Usignolo di fiume , the “Curlew” Hide for Airone cenerino, Chiurlo maggiore and larger gulls. The “Heron or Pentwd” Hide is good for Alzavola, Fischione, Piro piro culbianco, Pettegola and has a good view over the whole marsh.
