The Oa Peninsula features a rocky coastline where Gracchio corallino breed and are protected. More than 110 other species have been seen here. Aquila reale and Albanella reale are frequent. Oca lombardella and Oca facciabianca (20,000 or more) graze the farm fields in winter. Up to 14 species of duck may be seen here, either offshore or in the freshwater lochs. Smaller birds include Fanello nordico, Allodola and occasional Re di quaglie, mostly on migration.
Mammals to see here include otter, red squirrel, red deer, dolphins, porpoises and seals. Harmless, plankton-eating basking sharks are a possibility in summer.

Islay is reached by CalMac ferry from Kinnacraig. Recent reports indicate the ferry fleet to be aging and unreliable. Delays are possible. The Oa is 6 miles west of Port Ellen by car or bicycle. The nearest bus stop is in Port Ellen.
