Descrizione
An extensive area of self-sown scrubland holds good numbers of warblers in summer, mainly Luì grosso and Luì piccolo, but also Bigiarella and Capinera. More mature trees provide habitat for Allocco. Picchio muratore and Parrocchetto dal collare have become common in recent years. The Wallsend Burn holds regular Martin pescatore and Ballerina gialla, and occasional Merlo acquaiolo in winter. In its lower tidal section Pettegola is regular, and the semi-tame Germano reales can attract other ducks, including Volpoca, Alzavola, and more rarely Codone and Anatra mandarina. There is limited viewing of the River Tyne where the stream runs into the Tyne, but is still worth checking for inland seabirds on the main river; Strolaga maggiore, Uria and Gazza marina have all been seen here on occasion, and in summer there is a constant procession of Gabbiano tridattilos moving to and from their nesting sites further upsteam.
