Descrizione
Witton Lakes are in the Stockland Green area of Birmingham. The two lakes are former drinking water reservoirs. The larger lake is used for boating and the smaller shallower lake is dedicated to wildlife. On the Northern side of the lakes is Witton Lakes Eco Hub, which has a cafe and toilets. The park has open grassland, wooded areas and wildflower meadows, numerous streams lead in and out of the lakes and a community orchard had been planted. The park has a very active friends group.
(*1) (press STAR on map), check large lake in Winter for Fischione, Canapiglia and good numbers of Tuffetto. Lower fish numbers mean Svasso maggiore are only in low numbers, Cigno reale numbers can be very high for a inner city location and Quattrocchi and Smergo maggiore occasionally turn up.
(*2), the smaller lake can have Alzavola, Mestolone, Gallinella d'acqua, Folaga and Airone cenerino though there is a lot of movement of ducks between each lake. A number of different species of Gull (Laridae) have been seen including Gavina and unusually for such an inland site Gabbiano tridattilo.
(*3), the area of trees at the Eastern end of the park has Lucherino and Cincia mora, Codibugnolo, Cinciarella and Cinciallegra are numerous. During Spring/Summer Sterpazzola, Luì grosso, Luì piccolo, Capinera, Balestruccio, Rondine and Rondone comune can be seen. Sterna comune regularly turn up on passage.
